Ahmedabad Construction: 15 Bridge Projects, 126 Diversions, and Delayed Deadlines

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has 15 bridge projects under construction across the city. Civic data counted 126 traffic diversions caused by bridge, drainage and road work. Several projects, including the Naroda Patiya flyover, the Makarba railway overbridge and the Vadaj flyover, have missed their deadlines. 

Much of the work is tied to the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which Ahmedabad will host. Commuters report that trips which took 10 minutes now take 30 to 45 minutes. On social media, some residents have started calling the city "Constructionabad".

• Subhash Bridge is being rebuilt as a new 8-lane bridge at about ₹241 crore. AMC has set a 24-month deadline, with one side to open within 16 months. 

• Naroda Patiya flyover deadline has moved from July 2026 to June 2027.

Why So Much Work at Once 

• Commonwealth Games 2030: Ahmedabad was chosen as host on 26 November 2025 in Glasgow. AMC officials have said roads must be ready for the extra traffic. 

• Old bridges: Subhash Bridge, built in 1973, became unsafe and has to be replaced. 

• Railway crossings and busy junctions: new overbridges and flyovers are meant to remove railway gates and signal jams.

What Is Causing the 126 Diversions 

The main reasons, as per civic data reported in January 2026: 

Project Status (September 2026) 

Subhash Bridge 

Subhash Bridge was closed on 4 December 2025 after a crack appeared near pillar number 9. AMC first approved a ₹236 crore repair plan. Tests by engineers from IIT and SVNIT then found the 1973 foundations too weak to save, so AMC decided to rebuild the bridge. 

The new steel-composite bridge will have 8 lanes and be about 453 metres long. Demolition of the old bridge began in July 2026. 

The old bridge carried 1.7 to 2.5 lakh vehicles a day. That traffic now uses Dadhichi Bridge and the Sabarmati Riverfront roads. 

Naroda Patiya Flyover 

The flyover will run about 2.5 km from Naroda Patiya to Galaxy Junction. It will be the city's longest. 

AMC has moved its deadline from July 2026 to June 2027. It cited forest land issues, slow work and the shifting of underground utilities. The contractor has been fined ₹50 lakh. 

Makarba Railway Overbridge 

The overbridge will replace the railway gate at Makarba and link the area to Corporate Road and SG Highway. About 1.5 lakh residents of Makarba, Sarkhej and nearby areas are expected to benefit. 

It was due in November 2024. AMC officials have blamed a collapsed drainage line and delays in getting railway permission for work over the tracks. 

One commuter told ThePrint that his 8 km scooter ride from Makarba to Vejalpur now takes nearly an hour, up from about 25 minutes. 

Vadaj Flyover 

The four-lane flyover costs over ₹106 crore and is about 735 metres long. Work began in July 2023 with a 30-month deadline, which ended in November 2025. 

Once open, traffic from Ashram Road to Vadaj Circle and Ranip will skip three signals. 

Panjrapole Flyover 

The Gujarat High Court dismissed a petition against this project in January 2025. The petition had raised concerns over tree cutting and the contractor. 

The flyover will connect Ambawadi and IIM Road, and about 1.5 lakh commuters are expected to use it. 

Ellis Bridge 

The Gujarat government approved ₹32.40 crore for restoring the 1892 steel bridge in July 2024. A Sabarmati flood and pending pillar work have delayed it. After restoration, it will be open only to pedestrians, with seating and greenery. 

Projects Planned by 2028 

Officials have said Ahmedabad will get 12 more bridges by 2028 at a cost of over ₹1,400 crore. These include: 

• A parallel bridge to Chimanbhai Patel Bridge, from RTO Circle towards Sabarmati and Chandkheda 

• Flyovers from Law Garden to Panchvati Junction and from Ambawadi Junction to CN Vidyalaya 

• Reconstruction of the Sarangpur railway overbridge at ₹113.25 crore, with Kalupur bridge to follow 

• Three new bridges in Asarwa, with work expected to run till December 2027

Why Projects Get Delayed 

AMC officials list the same causes across projects: 

• Shifting of underground water, drainage and power lines 

• Late approvals from the Railways for overbridges 

• Land and forest land issues 

• Design changes after work has started 

For Commuters 

• Check live traffic before travelling near Subhash Bridge, Dadhichi Bridge, Panjrapole, Vadaj and Makarba. 

• The Metro avoids most of these road work sites.
